Song: Heartbeats
Artist: The Knife
Album: Deep Cuts
Year: Sweden - 2003, U.S. - 2006
Claim to Fame: Siblings Karin Dreijer Andersson and Olof Dreijer a.k.a. The Knife, have been well known in Sweden since 1999, but it wasn’t until José Gonzales covered one of their hit singles “Heartbeats” in the late 2000’s to back the Sony commercial seen here, that they received international recognition. They have since gone on to win numerous Grammis - the Swedish equivalent to The Grammys.
Oh Yeah?: The Knife rarely cooperate with the media or the mainstream music scene. Until 2006, they did not perform live concerts. The group rarely makes public appearances; most of their promotional photos feature the members wearing masks with birds’ beaks, similar to the traditional Venetian Medico Della Peste (plague doctor) masks worn during Carnival.
Why This Song?: I remember seeing the Sony commercial a few years back and falling in love with it. I still think it’s one of the coolest commercials I’ve ever seen. I love both versions of this song equally, and listening to them makes my day just a little bit better.
Favorite Lyric: Ten days of perfect tunes/The colors red and blue/We had a promise made/We were in love.
